  • The goal of the offered PhD assignment is to render the proof-of-concept for a semiconductor-based sensor system that will be used in the field of food state and freshness detection. As a PhD student, you will gain insights in all aspects of a sensor development, e.g.:
  • Gas-sensitive Materials: Selection of metal-oxides, that fulfill the requirements regarding sensitivity and stability wherein the selection should be supported by investigating the mode of action
  • Data Acquisition System: Evaluation of various transduction schemes (e.g., impedance spectroscopy) and operation modes by means of an application-specific circuit design
  • Advanced Algorithms: Development of an AI framework in order to leverage the full potential of the previously devised hardware
  • Measurement Technology: Bring-up of a measurement setup for in-situ gas measurements
  • System Validation: Preparation and execution field tests
  • This position offers a unique opportunity to be exposed to two complementary areas of sensor R&D, namely academic research and industrial development. By driving the proof of concept, the PhD student has good prospects to participate in a following product development.

  • Personality: Strong communication skills & ability to drive innovative solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset. High level of interdisciplinary comprehension and willlingnes to deeply dive into technological topics. You enjoy the dynamic field of consumer electronics.
  • Working Practice: Very good decision-making abilities and positive team player with cross cultural competence. You work analytically, structured and responsibly.
  • Experience and Know-how: Semiconductor physics; circuit design (FPGA);
  • Languages: Business fluent English (C1 - C2) required and basic German language skills optional.
  • Education: Above-average degree in technical or scientific subjects (master's/diploma) especially in Physics, Electrical Engineering or microsystems engineering
